One Day in Bangkok: The Perfect 24-Hour Itinerary
Only have a day in Bangkok? See the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, ride the river, eat your way down Chinatown and finish on a rooftop — with times, transport and costs.
On this page
One day isn’t long, but Bangkok’s headline sights sit conveniently along the river. This route uses boats and the MRT to dodge traffic and ends with the city’s best street food.
Before you start: wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees for the temples, and carry small notes for the boats.
Morning · Temples by the river
- 8:00 — Wat Pho. Arrive at opening time to have the reclining Buddha almost to yourself. (฿300)
- 9:30 — Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew. A five-minute walk north. Allow two hours. (฿500)
- 11:45 — Cross to Wat Arun. Walk to Tha Tien pier and take the cross-river ferry. Climb the central prang for the view. (฿200)
Midday · Lunch and a break
- 13:00 — Lunch by the river. Back across the water, try the restaurants around Tha Maharaj or a noodle shop near Tha Tien.
- 14:00 — Cool down. It’s the hottest part of the day. Head back to your hotel, or treat yourself to a Thai massage. Wat Pho’s own school is excellent.
Afternoon · The river and Talat Noi
- 15:30 — Chao Phraya Express boat (orange flag) downstream to Si Phraya or Ratchawong pier. (~฿16)
- 16:00 — Wander Talat Noi. Old Chinese houses, street art and riverside cafés.
Evening · Chinatown and a rooftop
- 18:00 — Yaowarat Road. As the neon comes on, eat your way down Chinatown’s main street. Share plates so you can try more. (~฿500)
- 20:30 — A rooftop nightcap. Grab a taxi to Silom or the riverside for a drink with a view. (~฿600–1,000)
What one day costs
About ฿2,500 per person with entry fees, food, boats and one rooftop drink, plus your hotel. Adjust it in the trip budget calculator.
