Five rules for picking a Bangkok hotel

  1. Stay within a 10-minute walk of a BTS or MRT station. It matters more than the neighborhood itself.
  2. Check which soi. Hotels "on Sukhumvit" can be a 20-minute walk down a side street. Look at the map, not the address.
  3. Read recent reviews for noise. Bars, construction and morning markets can all be right outside.
  4. A pool is worth it. In Bangkok's heat, an afternoon swim is part of the plan, not a luxury.
  5. Compare two booking sites. Prices for the same room often differ by 10–20%.

See exact nightly price ranges for every area and level in the budget guide. On a tight budget but want your own room? Here's where to find private rooms for ฿550–800.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Bangkok for first-timers?

Siam or the Riverside. Siam has the best Skytrain connections in the city; the Riverside puts you a boat ride from the Grand Palace with lovely hotels. The Old Town is great if you want to walk to the big temples and don’t mind no Skytrain.

Where should I stay in Bangkok for nightlife?

Sukhumvit (Nana to Asok) for bars and clubs, Thonglor and Ekkamai for cocktail bars and a trendier crowd, or Silom for rooftop bars.

Where is the best area to stay in Bangkok with kids?

Siam: it’s central, connected by Skytrain, and full of air-conditioned malls, the aquarium and family-friendly food. The Riverside is a calmer alternative with pools and river views.

Is it better to stay near the BTS or MRT?

Yes — being within 5–10 minutes’ walk of a BTS or MRT station is the single most useful thing when choosing a Bangkok hotel. Traffic makes taxis slow at rush hour.
