Bangkok’s rain usually comes as a dramatic hour-long storm rather than all-day drizzle, but in the wet season (May to October) you’ll want a plan. Here’s how to make the most of it.

Culture

  1. Museum Siam: an interactive, playful museum about what it means to be Thai. Closed Mondays.
  2. Jim Thompson House: guided tours through a beautiful teak home and art collection.
  3. Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC): free contemporary art right by BTS National Stadium.
  4. The Grand Palace’s covered halls and Wat Pho: plenty of shelter, and fewer crowds when it’s grey.

Relax

  1. A two-hour Thai massage: the perfect rainy-afternoon plan. See the massage guide.
  2. A spa afternoon at a hotel or day spa.
  3. A cooking class: learn three dishes, eat them, and go home with recipes.

Malls (they’re more fun than you’d think)

  1. Icon Siam’s indoor floating market: street food from all over Thailand, indoors by the river.
  2. Siam Paragon food hall: one of the best food halls in Asia.
  3. Terminal 21: each floor themed as a world city, with a famously cheap food court.

Family and fun

  1. SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World under Siam Paragon.
  2. KidZania for kids who want to “work” in a pretend city.
  3. A cinema: Bangkok’s luxury screens come with recliners, blankets and waiter service. Stand for the royal anthem before the film.
  4. Bowling, karaoke or an escape room in the bigger malls.

Eat and drink

  1. A long lunch in a shophouse restaurant, or a café-hop in Ari or Thonglor. The rain sounds great on a tin roof.
