Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is Bangkok’s main international airport, about 30 km east of the city center. You have four realistic ways into town. The best one depends on what time you land, how much luggage you have and where you’re staying.

Short answer: solo or a couple with light bags, landing in the daytime → take the Airport Rail Link. Family, lots of luggage, or landing late → metered taxi or a pre-booked car.

Plug in your hotel’s neighborhood in the airport transfer calculator to see the exact numbers for your group.

The train leaves from the basement (Level B) of the terminal and runs to Makkasan (for the MRT and Sukhumvit) and Phaya Thai (for the BTS Skytrain).

  • Cost: ฿15–45 per person, depending on the stop
  • Time: about 26 minutes to Phaya Thai
  • Hours: roughly 5:30am to midnight
  • Good for: light packers heading to Siam, Sukhumvit, Silom or Ari

Local tip: The connections at Phaya Thai and Makkasan involve stairs and walkways. With two big suitcases, the money you save may not be worth the effort.

2. Metered public taxi

Follow the signs to the Public Taxi stand on Level 1. Take a queue ticket from the kiosk; it shows your lane number.

  • Cost: the meter fare, plus a ฿50 airport surcharge, plus expressway tolls (pay them at the booth as you go). Expect roughly ฿350–550 to most central neighborhoods.
  • Time: 35–60 minutes, much longer in rush hour.

Make sure the driver turns the meter on. If they quote a flat price, politely ask for the meter or get out and take the next taxi.

3. Grab or Bolt

Ride-hailing pickup points are on Level 4 (departures) or a designated Level 1 area. You see a fixed price before booking, which takes the worry out of it — but prices surge when it rains or flights bunch up.

You’ll need mobile data as soon as you land. An eSIM installed before you fly makes this painless.

4. Pre-booked private transfer (easiest)

A driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign and takes you straight to your hotel. Tolls are included and you know the price in advance.

  • Cost: around ฿1,000–1,200 for a sedan, more for a van
  • Good for: families, late-night arrivals, first-timers who’d rather not deal with queues

Scams and annoyances to avoid

  • Touts inside the terminal offering “taxi” at flat rates — always far more than the meter.
  • “Your hotel is closed / flooded” — no it isn’t.
  • Drivers who “forget” the meter — ask for it before you set off.
