Bangkok is a surprisingly good city for kids. Thais adore children, the food is easy to adapt, and there’s air-conditioned fun around every corner. The keys are a good base, a slower pace and a plan for the afternoon heat.

Where to stay with kids

  • Siam is the top pick: central, on both Skytrain lines, and next to the aquarium, malls and food courts.
  • Riverside hotels have big pools, river views and boat shuttles, which kids love.
  • Sukhumvit around Phrom Phong (not Nana) has family-friendly serviced apartments with kitchens.

Look for a hotel within a short walk of a BTS station and with a good pool. Use the where-to-stay quiz and choose “With kids”.

Things to do

Toddlers and little ones

  • SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World under Siam Paragon
  • Children’s Discovery Museum by Chatuchak Park (free play areas)
  • Feeding fish and spotting monitor lizards in Lumphini Park
  • Boat rides on the Chao Phraya Express — cheap and exciting

Ages 5–12

  • KidZania in Siam Paragon, a city where kids role-play real jobs
  • Museum Siam, an interactive museum about Thai identity (closed Mondays)
  • Bike rides in Rot Fai Park, or a guided family bike tour of Bang Krachao
  • Cooking classes: many welcome children

Teens

  • Mahanakhon SkyWalk and its glass floor
  • Muay Thai training sessions or a stadium fight night
  • Chatuchak Weekend Market for shopping and snacks
  • Night markets like Jodd Fairs or Asiatique

Getting around with kids

  • The BTS and MRT have lifts at most stations, but not every exit. Plan routes around the station with a lift.
  • Strollers struggle on Bangkok’s uneven pavements. A lightweight, foldable one, or a baby carrier for toddlers, works best.
  • Car seats are rare in taxis and Grab cars. If it matters to you, book a private transfer and request one, or bring a travel seat.
  • Boats are great fun, but hold small children firmly and avoid rush hour.

Food

  • Kid-friendly dishes: khao man gai (chicken rice), khao pad (fried rice), moo ping (grilled pork skewers), pad see ew and mango sticky rice. Ask for “mai phet” (not spicy). See the Thai food guide.
  • Mall food courts have something for everyone, clean seating and air-con.
  • 7-Eleven stocks yoghurt, milk, sandwiches and snacks around the clock.

Heat, health and safety

  • Plan around the heat. Do outdoor sights before 11am, retreat to malls, the pool or a nap in the afternoon, and head out again after 4pm.
  • Water: drink bottled or filtered water; ice in restaurants is safe.
  • Sun and mosquitoes: use high-SPF sunscreen and child-safe repellent every day.
  • Healthcare: Bangkok’s private hospitals, such as Bumrungrad and Samitivej, are excellent. Get travel insurance that covers children.
  • Supplies: diapers, formula and baby food are easy to find at Boots, Watsons, supermarkets and 7-Eleven.

Local tip: Thai staff will often fuss over your children, offer to hold babies or give them sweets. It’s meant kindly. Just smile and say “khop khun” (thank you).

Build a family-paced plan in the itinerary planner: pick “Relaxed” and tick “Family-friendly”.
